KONA COFFEE: One of the World's Most Sought-after Coffees

Since the 1800s the feisty, independent farmers of Kona on The Big Island of Hawaii have cultivated their crop by hand, enjoying a venerable spot in the pantheon of world coffees. Rich, full-bodied Kona coffee is one of the most expensive brews on the planet. Why?

This coffee growing area on the West side of Hawaii lies in the misty uplands where a cool dry season and a warm rainy season offer ideal growing conditions. The coffee is rain-watered, hand picked and sun-dried. The prized beans fetch record retail prices today from $20-$40 a pound, roasted.

KONA COFFEE IS IN HIGH DEMAND
Why? For centuries it has been respected for its high quality.
Many believe that grown in its best conditions Kona Coffee is the quintessential coffee in the world.

Coffee Quality…what are ingredients that make up “quality?”
1. Flavor
2. Aroma
3. Taste
4. Visual aesthetics
5. Nutritional or health values
6. No pesticide residues or other detrimental residuals

Many coffee producing countries must use insecticides and fungicides to control pests. In Kona we have no major pests like in other countries, and what few Kona does have…like ants and scale…are controlled by natural enemies. Many Kona farmers use organic fatty acids or soaps to eliminate scale without killing beneficial insects. Another organic material, Pyrenone is cleared for insect control.
This is a real advantage when health conscious consumers are striving to find and purchase products that are pesticide free.
